Power of Smile
June 15 is Power of a Smile Day, and this special day is the perfect excuse to experience
the benefits of smiling as you show off your pearly whites. Aside from making you look
friendlier and more attractive, smiles also have effects on your health and the people around
you.
Studies show that smiles can improve your mood and help your health, even when you
have to force them. When you smile with your lips and eyes, your body responds. Smiling
increases the levels of mood-enhancing hormones in the body and helps reduce the levels of
stress-hormones. It can also have other benefits, like lowering a person’s blood pressure. In
fact, British researchers found that one smile stimulates a person’s brain as much as eating
2,000 chocolate bars or receiving US$25,000 in cash.
Another piece of good news is that smiles spread easily from one person to another.
People naturally mimic the facial expressions of those they see, so if you smile, there’s a
good chance that they’ll smile back. In this way, you’ll help them improve their health, too.
Now that’s definitely something to smile about.
